Guccio trots to 1:52.1 score in Bluegrass 3-year-old colt trot
The Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) program at The Red Mile featured three divisions in the Bluegrass Series for 3-year-old trotting colts.

Christina Takter, John and Jim Fielding and Falkbolagen Ab's Guccio took advantage of the rail in the $75,000 first division and trotted to victory lane in a lifetime mark of 1:52.1.

Nigel Soult
Guccio scored for Jimmy Takter in a lifetime best 1:52.1.

Trainer Jimmy Takter was in the sulky for Guccio and Sunday's win was just the second in 12 starts this year for the son of Yankee Glide-Southern Senorita who saw his 2012 earnings climb to $650,971.

Solvato and Trond Smedshammer left from post two and hit the opening quarter on top in :28. That lead was short lived as Guccio ($2.40) pulled from off the rail in third and took over the front end at the :56.1 half-mile marker.

Guccio remained on top at the 1:26 three-quarter pole and then posted a final panel of :26.1 in hitting the wire in 1:52.1. Solvato held on to finish second with Modern Family third.

"He has been racing fantastic all year," said Takter. "He's a horse that's been a project all year, he was very easy to go on a break. You have to be very careful, especially the first half. He came good at the end all the time, but he's been getting very good -- better and better."

Takter added hobbles to Guccio earlier this month and offered his insight into the equipment change..

"I did that because I can use him a little better in the start," said Takter. "He really does not need them, but it's so tough when you end up seventh or eighth every time at the half -- you have to make up too many lengths. With the hobbles I can use him better out of the gate."

The $76,000 middle division saw longshot Money On My Mind collar heavy favorite Little Brown Fox in the shadow of the wire to score in a time of 1:52.2, a national season's record for a 3-year-old trotting gelding on a mile track. Andy Miller was in the bike for trainer Julie Miller and owner Black Horse Racing as the Cantab Hall-Repititions sophomore posted his third win in 13 season's starts, with his 2012 bankroll climbing to $231,248.
Nigel Soult
Money On My Mind was a narrow winner in a time of 1:52.2.

Little Brown Fox and Jimmy Takter tired to wire the field in this division, cutting panels of :27.1, :55.4 and 1:24.3. Money On My Mind ($40.20) sat in the pocket for the whole mile, then shook loose down the lane and passed the leader in a tight photo at the wire. Banker Volo rallied to finish third.

"He was great today," said driver Andy Miller. "He raced really good on Tuesday at The Meadows (a second place finish in a Keystone Classic race). He just didn't like Canada too much a couple of weeks ago (a ninth place finish in the Canadian Trotting Classic). But he showed up today. He's been getting better but it's kind of been an up and down year for him.

"We made a couple of changes but I'm sure he loves the surface here at The Red Mile, which all horses do. It's such a nice place and such a nice day today.

"I thought I got by him (Little Brown Fox) but it was pretty tight. This guy really dug in to get by him."

The $76,000 third and final division went to Appomattox and driver Scott Zeron in a lifetime best clocking of 1:52.2. The son of Yankee Glide-Courtney Hall is trained by Frank Antonacci for owners Lindy Racing Stable, Adam Victor & Son Stable, John Fielding and Brittany Farms. The victory was his second in 11 starts this year as his season's earnings improved to $128,378.
Nigel Soult
Appomattox surged by Another Amaretto in the final strides to win the third division in 1:52.2.

There was plenty of action in this division as a trio of horses took their turn on the lead. Beer Summit was fastest away from the gate and took the field to the opening quarter in :28.2. Big Chocolate pulled the pocket down the backstretch and was the new leader at the :56.1 half-mile marker, but he gave way to Another Amaretto who took the field to the three-quarters in 1:24.

Another Amaretto was still in command at the head of the lane but Zeron had Appomattox flying down the middle of the track and they hit the wire on top in 1:52.2. Another Amaretto held on for second with Fusion Man picking up the show dough.

"He really stepped up," said Zeron. "He's been racing well all year but he's been outshined by a few other ones.

"Today we really lucked out on the trip. I was able to keep him in all the way until the last turn and shake loose for a nice second over trip following the favorite. Down the lane he did the rest of the work. He really dug in and beat some good horses today."
