At 37 Henrik Lundell has an impressive CV.

Henrik Lundell might only be 37 but his love of harness racing has already seen him work with standardbreds in Sweden, France, Italy, Canada and the United States. It's quite ironic considering Jobstown (New Jersey) based Lundell wasn't born into a harness racing family.

He was born in the city of Lidkoping (26,000), which is situated on the southern shore of Lake Vanernin south-west Sweden. His only association with the sport was going to the local races with his father, Owe.

“It wasn’t until I was about 18 that I really became hooked. Me and a few friends bought a piece of a 2-year-old. She wasn’t any good. In fact she only raced once.

“But it was that horse that ultimately determined my future. Not long after I bought into her I knew this was the career I wanted to pursue,” Lundell told Harnesslink.

From De La Gardieskolan School Lundell went and worked for Thomas Nilsson. He was a popular horseman in Sweden and Lundell joined him three years after he won the 1990 Elitlopp with Mack Lobell.

In 1996 Lundell spent six months working for fellow Swede Jimmy Takter in the United States.

“A friend of mine was a blacksmith for Jimmy and it was through him I got to work for Jimmy. I only stayed six month because I got a bit homesick but it was an eye-opener and I always thought I would return here again one day, because I really liked it,” Lundell said.

Lundell then worked in Swedish stables for seven years and took a horse to compete in France for eight months before being offered a job in Italy.

“I worked in Italy from December 2003 to December 2004 before taking up a job in Florida,”said Lundell.

He took up a position as second trainer for another Swedish horseman - Tommy Andersson. It was while campaigning horses in Canada for Andersson that I came into contact with his current employer – Antoinette Nigito of Joie De Vie Farm in Jobstown.

Joie De Vie Farm is a 125 acre harness racing haven, which is home to more than 100 horses - 16 of which are currently worked by Lundell.

The Farm has four main barns, each named after a horse previously owned by the Nigito family, namely Lindy Lane Barn, Moni Maker Barn, Walk on The Beach Barn and Prakas Barn.

“I really enjoy working at Joie de Vie. We have a good team of horses and a great staff. Two thirds of the horses would be trotters,” Lundell said.

Although he has driven two winners, Lundell insists he is primarily a trainer.

“I’ve had a few wins over the years as a second trainer for various people. I love working with horses. It’s all I have ever wanted to do and I have no regrets about my career choice,” Lundell said.

He has trained 20 winners from 199 starters in the USA since 2006. He’s also placed 25 times for $215,580 in purses.

His last winner was with Rapid Strategy at Yonkers Raceway on December 23. However that could change soon as his team prepares to qualify. In fact P L Eureka, Grantville and Blue Sky De Vie have all been to the ‘Qualifiers’ this month.

Lundell’s biggest win came in 2004 when he was second trainer for Paul Bluer. On November 13 that year Fan favourite and Luc Ouellette won the $300,000 Ontario Super Final for 2yo trotters at Woodbine.

Lundell is not married and outside of harness racing is a huge New Jersy Devils hockey fan. He said he was happy in the United States and had no plans of returning home.

He speaks Swedish. English, Italian, French, German, and Norwegian. His favourite quote is:

“Shake and bake” and his favourite music is Joakim Thastrom, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Guns N’Roses.
