Traceur Hanover and Andy Miller won the Breeders Crown for 2-year-old pacing colts by a half-length in 1:51.
Traceur Hanover holds off In The Arsenal in freshman Crown pace
Traceur Hanover and driver Andy Miller won the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old pacing colts on Saturday at the Meadowlands by a half-length in a time of 1:51.

The early going was marred by breaks by Lyons Levi Lewis and Franzo in the first turn. Sicily was in front of them going to the quarter in :26.2, but the rest of the field had to re-adjust after the breaking horses.

In The Arsenal (Brian Sears) rushed to the lead past the first quarter-mile mark and kept that lead until Traceur Hanover came up to challenge on the outside with Go Daddy Go (John Campbell) three wide. Those two hit the half-mile mark together in :55.2.

Traceur Hanover and Go Daddy Go were still jousting for the lead at the 1:23 three-quarters and into the home stretch. Traceur Hanover closed strongest of all for the win, his fifth in 14 starts.

In The Arsenal tipped out from third along the rail on the turn and paced hard down the stretch late to take the second spot and Lyons Levi Lewis withstood an inquiry into leaving the course to finish third.

Traceur Hanover is owned by Richard Berthiaume of Quebec and trained by Corey Johnson. He is a son of Western Ideal-Transference.

“There were a lot of breakers, a lot going on there,” said Andy Miller. “We just had to bide our time and wait to get through it all. I was a little worried about making the move I did, but I beat (In The Arsenal) last week and he (Sears) knew I had a good horse and he was willing to follow me. He (Traceur Hanover) was good last week and came back with the same effort this week.”

JK She'salady remained unbeaten, winning the Breeders Crown for 2-year-old filly pacers in 1:50.2.
JK She’salady remains unbeaten with stakes record in Crown
Make that an even dozen in as many tries for JK She’salady as she and driver Tim Tetrick won the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old pacing fillies on Saturday night at the Meadowlands. She covered the mile in 1:50.2, a track and stakes record.

JK She’salady is trained by Nancy Johansson and owned by 3 Brothers Stables of New York. It was the first winner for 33-year-old Johansson, who is the daughter of Hall of Fame trainer Jimmy Takter. The homebred daughter of Art Major-Presidential Lady is undefeated and a major contender for Horse of the Year honors. She would be the first 2-year-old pacing filly accorded that honor.

Bettor Be Steppin (Corey Callahan) was on the lead to the first quarter-mile mark in :26.3, before Tetrick left the rail in fourth place with JK She’salady, who rushed to the top in just a few strides.

She led the field to the :54.4 half, with Bettor Be Steppin at her back all the way to the 1:22.4 three-quarters. By then, Sassa Hanover and Yannick Gingras were up to challenge and pressured JK She’salady around the final turn and into the lane.

Tetrick kept JK She’salady to her task and went straight to the finish line by 1-3/4 lengths in front of second place finisher Sassa Hanover and Bettor Be Steppin in third.

“I’m very honored to get to drive her,” said winning driver Tim Tetrick. “I lucked into it. Yannick (Gingras) didn’t take her and they asked me to drive her and I was more than happy to do that. I protected myself in the first turn and the way it was shaking out, I moved her to the front and she did the rest. Sassa came at her, run at her hard enough, and my mare just put her away and raced really strong all the way to the wire. It’s always great, but to drive a great filly like this is a great honor.”

“I like the trotters,” said Johansson. “But I actually think the pacers are really exciting. I like the speed and it’s something a little bit different. Around February I asked my dad (Jimmy Takter) if he had any good 2-year-old pacing fillies and I told him he could leave them at home because I had the best one. So I guess I was right. I knew she was going to be good, but I didn’t really know she was going to be this good. That is always a pleasant surprise. She’s just super special and I’m just blessed to have her in my barn.”

Johansson said the undefeated filly is off the track for the year.

“She’s going to go for a vacation in North Carolina,” she said. “She deserves a little better weather, so she’s going to go down there and get six weeks off. Then she’ll start back for her 3-year-old season. It feels great.”

McWicked held off a fast-closing Somesizesomestyle to capture the Breeders Crown for 3-year-old male pacers in 1:49.
McWicked takes Crown sophomore colt pace in 1:49
McWicked grabbed the lead midway through the race and held off the fast-closing group of Somesizesomestyle, JK Endofanera and Doo Wop Hanover to win Saturday’s scratch-depleted $531,250 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old male pacers in 1:49 at the Meadowlands.

The complexion of the race changed prior to the start when elimination winners Always B Miki and Limelight Beach both were sidelined. Always B Miki, the winner of five consecutive starts, was scratched lame moments prior to the race; Limelight Beach had been scratched sick earlier in the day.

Luck Be Withyou, who won the 2013 Breeders Crown for 2-year-old male pacers, left quickly from post nine and took the lead in a :26 opening quarter-mile. Favorite JK Endofanera took the lead on the backstretch, but was on top only briefly before yielding to McWicked and driver Brian Sears in a :54.1 half.

McWicked remained in the lead as the field reached three-quarters in 1:21.3, but had to work in the stretch to hold off Somesizesomestyle by a half-length.

“The first scratch that we heard this morning (Limelight Beach) was going to change the race big time with Limelight not in there and obviously Miki (Always B Miki), the dead favorite, it really changed the race complex a lot,” said McWicked's trainer Casie Coleman. “I didn’t expect Wicked was going to be up front.”

Sent off at odds of 9-5, McWicked (McArdle-Western Sahara) has won 10 of 21 races this season and $1.30 million for trainer Casie Coleman and owner Ed James’ S S G Stables.

It was Brian Sears' second win in this year’s Breeders Crown and the 26th of his career. Coleman has won four trophies.

“He started the year awesome and he wasn’t so good in the (Little Brown) Jug and we had a couple not so good, subpar starts, but he really bounced back last week and this week he was awesome,” Coleman said.

“That was his last stake and I had told Ed a couple weeks ago, 110 percent he was done for the season. After he raced last week I said we might supplement the Progress Pace (eliminations on Nov. 30 at Dover Downs), so we’ll see how he comes out of the race, but I think we might supplement to the Progress.”

Trainer Joe Holloway had this update on Always B Miki after the race.

“I don’t know (what happened),” said Holloway. “He was feeling good. He always acts up. I don’t know whether he kicked the wall (in his stall). These are cement walls. I had two guys sitting with him, or maybe it was back in the retention barn. It doesn’t matter where.

“He only warmed slightly. He was just a little bit off. I just jogged him to warm up. I just thought maybe his back was a little bit kinked up. He went out when David (Miller) scored him down and just let loose. So, my guess is he probably broke a sesamoid bone by the way he acts, but I don’t know. He broke something. Where, I don’t know.”

Supplemented entry Sayitall BB scored from post nine in the Breeders Crown for 3-year-old female pacers.
Sayitall BB posts upset in Breeders Crown sophomore filly pace
Sayitall BB took the lead in the early moments and controlled the race from there, winning Friday’s $593,750 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old female pacers by three-quarters of a length over Major Dancer in 1:50.3 at the Meadowlands.

Supplemented to the Breeders Crown for $62,500, Sayitall BB started from post nine and led the field through fractions of :27.2, :55.4 and 1:24.1 on her way to victory. She paid $21 to win. Beach Gal finished third, followed by favorite Color’s A Virgin.

The victory was the second Breeders Crown triumph of the night for the driver-trainer combo of Yannick Gingras and Ron Burke. Gingras upped his total of trophies to nine, and Burke to eight.

Sayitall BB qualified for the Breeders Crown final by finishing fifth in her elimination last week, edging out Table Talk for the last spot to advance from the race.

“She’s Go On BB’s sister, we made a lot of money with her,” Burke said, referring to $1.4-million-earner Go On BB. “We just slipped into this race; I really thought we were sixth. I had already started sending out the apology texts to the owners for putting up all that money.”

Sayitall BB, a daughter of Tell All-Challo B B, has won nine of 15 races this year and earned $502,410 for owners Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi LLC.

Gallie Bythe Beach, who last week won her Breeders Crown elimination, was scratched sick. It is the second consecutive year that Gallie Bythe Beach won an elim, but was unable to compete in the final.

Uffizi Hanover, who won last season’s Breeders Crown for 2-year-old female pacers, went off stride before the start and was not a factor.

Thinking Out Loud burst through the stretch and caught favorite Sweet Lou in the final strides to capture Saturday’s $400,000 Breeders Crown Open Pace by a head in 1:48.3 at the Meadowlands.

Sent off at odds of 4-1, Thinking Out Loud and driver John Campbell rallied from sixth place in the stretch to finish ahead of Sweet Lou, State Treasurer and Modern Legend at the wire.

Campbell extended his record for victories by a driver in the series to 46. It was the 16th triumph for trainer Bob McIntosh, who is second to Jimmy Takter in victories in Breeders Crown history.

Bettor’s Edge went to the front early before giving way to Foiled Again in an opening quarter-mile of :27.3. Sweet Lou grabbed the lead on the backstretch, but received pressure from Modern Legend as the field hit the halfway point in :54.2.

Those two remained locked in a battle at three-quarters, in 1:20.4, before Sweet Lou began to edge away in the stretch. But Thinking Out Loud was only beginning his charge and made up 4-1/4 lengths in the lane to claim the victory.

A total of 2-3/4 lengths separated the entire seven-horse field.

“I was third over, but I was having a hard time keeping up at that point,” Campbell said. “I had to chase him hard until mid-stretch and then he kicked in and that’s when he was pacing his best the last eighth of a mile. He is a closer; we’ve tried to race him up front and every time it doesn’t work. He’s just a real good closer and always has been.”

Thinking Out Loud, a 5-year-old homebred son of Ponder-Los Angeles, is owned by Robert McIntosh Stables, C S X Stables and Al McIntosh Holdings. He has won five of 21 races this year and 16 of 54 lifetime, with total purses of $1.87 million.

“It’s very special, one that I raised myself and raced his father and his mother, too, so that’s special,” said McIntosh, sporting a Detroit Tigers cap. “I knew it was going to be very tough, I think this is the best bunch of free-for-allers I can remember in my 40 years in the business.

“When you have four from one stable (of trainer Ron Burke), it was tough. I was using (an expletive) there because it didn’t look good, stacked up, but thank God that Brett Miller came with (Modern Legend) and mixed it up a little; that made it a better race. It was a hell of a race, hell of a race.”

Shelliscape defeated Rocklamation by a half-length to win the Breeders Crown Mare Pace in 1:49.4.
Shelliscape repeats in Breeders Crown Mare Pace
Shelliscape came from the back of the pack to win Saturday’s $281,250 Breeders Crown Mare Pace by a half-length over Rocklamation in 1:49.4 at the Meadowlands, giving the 5-year-old mare her second consecutive victory in the event.

The win also gave Bamond Racing, the father-and-son team of Jeffrey Bamond and Jeffrey Jr., its fourth consecutive win in the Breeders Crown Mare Pace. Bamond Racing co-owns 2011-12 winner Anndrovette, who finished fourth tonight.

Voelz Hanover and Krispy Apple battled for the lead through a first quarter in :26 and half-mile in :53.1. Anndrovette made a three-wide move as the group hit three-quarters in 1:21.4, at which point Shelliscape and driver John Campbell were on the move from last place in the 11-horse field.

Rocklamation finished second, followed by Charisma Hanover and Anndrovette.

“She made up a lot of ground, she’s a real good closer,” Campbell said. “When I got away so bad, I was sure hoping the fractions were stepping up front because I was nowhere near where I wanted to be. Just the way it worked out at the gate, fortunately they got down there on time and when I moved her over at the head of the stretch I knew she was going to get a real good piece of it.”

The victory was Campbell’s second Breeders Crown triumph of the night and extended his record to 47 in the series. It was win No. 3 for trainer P.J. Fraley.

Campbell earlier in the night won the Breeders Crown Open Pace with a late charge from Thinking Out Loud.

“I’d rather race in the front; it’s much easier, no decisions to be made up there,” Campbell said. “But sometimes you’ve got to race off the pace and it worked out for both these horses tonight.”

Shelliscape, who went off at odds of 10-1, has won four of 25 races this year and 16 of 73 lifetime, with career purses of $1.15 million. She is a daughter of Artiscape-Shell I Scoot.
