Caviart Ally Upsets Defending Champ Shartin N

Caviart Ally kicked off the second night of the 2019 Breeders Crown upsetting defending champion Shartin N in the $394,737 Open Mares Pace on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Andrew McCarthy, who had kicked off Friday's freshman championships with back-to-back wins, got things started again on Saturday driving Caviart Ally to a 1:49.3 victory for trainer Brett Pelling and owner Caviart Farms.

A winner of this event last year at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, Shartin N has asserted her divisional dominance all season long but was collared in deep stretch by her arch rival Caviart Ally, who had also won their last match-up on Oct. 6 in the Allerage at The Red Mile.

Flying to the front from the outside seven slot, Kissin In The Sand (Yannick Gingras) put up a :25.4 opening quarter before 2-5 favourite Shartin N (Tim Tetrick) looped to the lead. She proceeded to the half in :55, with Caviart Ally following in the four-hole and flushed first-up by Youaremycandygirl (Louis Philippe Roy).

Shartin N continued to lead the way to three-quarters in 1:22.3 with Caviart Ally progressing up to her saddle pad and pressing on in the straightaway. She collared the favourite in the stretch and kicked 2-1/2 lengths clear to earn her crowning moment. Shartin N held on for second ahead of Kissin In The Sand and Youaremycandygirl.

"It's been a pretty good rivalry and Shartin had the better of us all year, but Caviart Ally, she just really seems to love this time of year," said McCarthy. "She's always come good like three, four, five, she just really excels in the fall and we're finally getting the better of her.

"We've tried every way to beat Shartin. In Lexington there, we said let's try not to leave so fast and we'll come late and I've done that again tonight. I just pushed the pace a little bit. She likes first-over, she always has, so she seems to be agreeing with it."

Caviart Ally finally earned her crown and it was a rewarding moment for her connections, who had watched the Bettors Delight-Allamerican Cool mare settle for runner-up honours in the Breeders Crown as a three-year-old behind Blazin Britches and last year behind Shartin N -- both times coming up just a half-length shy of glory.

"It’s super special," said Judy Chaffee, who owns and operates Caviart Farms with her husband Buck. "She’s been after the Breeders Crown every year and we’ve never been able to do it and finally! She’s such a great mare, she has deserved it. She has raced well every single year, every year in the Breeders Crown. This was her year."

"She really had to come strong that last quarter-mile," said Buck Chaffee, noting it was the best performance of Caviart Ally's career. "And when she headed her [Shartin] at the top of the stretch, they hooked up, and they've done that before and every other time we've come up a little short, but this time we didn't and it's just Brett and Andy doing a great, great job and the horse just really working hard and showing her stuff."

Caviart Ally, who had defended her Milton Stakes title at Mohawk on Sept. 21, returned $7 to win as the 5-2 second choice.

“It's an awesome event. Breeders Crown, it’s the ultimate for us in the game and I couldn’t be happier,” said Pelling of earning his 11th Breeders Crown trophy and first since 2005 when he chose to retire and return Down Under. “She’s a great, tough mare and she stands up. Tomorrow she’ll be looking to see what’s going on for the next day and she's just got a beautiful nature about her. One tough girl."

Caviart Ally now sports a seasonal summary reading 8-7-2 from 17 starts. Lifetime, the five-year-old mare has won 24 races and more than $1.87 million in purse earnings.

Shartin's trainer Jim King wasn't disappointed with the game effort from his stable star.

"She certainly didn’t race bad, she didn’t throw in the towel," he said. "Mainly she just hasn’t fully recovered from when she was sick. With the year being as long as it was, most of these horses here didn’t race in the (Blue Chip) Matchmaker (Series) or the Levy. There is a reason they don’t do that, and I’m pretty sure this is it. I thought she was recovered, I just don’t think she’s recovered as well I was telling myself she did. But she’s a long way from finished. As long as she seems OK, we’ll go on and finish the year. She’s really special."

  Eight Straight For Warrawee Ubeaut

Is she the best female pacer in harness racing right now? There's a chance we could see Warrawee Ubeaut take on the sport's older pacing mares in the TVG Final and if her Breeders Crown-winning performance is any indication she's a serious threat.

Yannick Gingras left for position with 1/5 shot Warrawee Ubeaut in the $720,500 ($550,000 USD) Breeders Crown Final for three-year-old pacing fillies, allowing Stonebridge Soul (Tim Tetrick) and Treacherous Reign (Dexter Dunn) to take turns on the lead through a :25.3 opener. Gingras moved from fourth and patiently stalked Treacherous Reign to clear to the lead before a :54.4 half.

The first to challenge the favourite was Tall Drink Hanover (Andy McCarthy), out from fifth and advancing to second through the third quarter, reached in 1:23.1 but Warrawee Ubeaut was still nearly two lengths clear. In the stretch, Gingras asked his mare to stay on task and she responded with a solid :26.4 finale to her 1:50.2 mile. Tall Dark Hanover was a length back in second with Stonebridge Soul third.

"We were talking before the race, Ronnie [Burke] and I, and the only move we didn't want to make was the move into the wind up the backstretch," said a victorious Yannick Gingras. "Strategy-wise maybe it didn't work out the way we wanted but she was getting a little anxious in the first turn so I figured instead of fighting with her I'd just let her go. I thought she was much the best and it was her race to lose...but she is so tough and so sharp right now. It's unreal."

Bred by nearby Warrawee Farm of Rockwood, Ont., Warrawee Ubeaut (Sweet Lou - Great Memories) now sports a summary of 12-2-3 from her 17 seasonal starts for trainer Ron Burke and his co-owners Phil Collura of Mountain Top, Penn., JandT Silva Purnel & Libby stable of Delray Beach, Fl. and Weaver Bruscemi LLC of Canonsburg, Penn. The winner's share of the purse puts her seasonal bankroll at $1,044,402 and career bankroll just shy of $1.7 million.

"It’s hard to repeat, for sure. I’m proud of her," said Burke. "That’s back-to-back years on two terrible nights and she overcame. I think she’s doing everything we could ask of her right now."

When asked if she can get much better, Burke replied "No, but she can go faster. One of these days it will set up where somebody cuts out huge numbers and she can sit in, just like last year when she went (1):48, and she’ll do something special then. She’s just a very special horse."

Trainer Tony Alagna finished second with Tall Drink Hanover while his other entrant Treacherous Reign finished fifth .

"Warrawee Ubeaut has been dominant, she was very good the second part of the season.," said Alagna. "Treacherous Reign got stung pretty good getting to the front. I thought the other filly raced great first over. She came first over from fifth which is very tough to do, especially into a headwind, so I thought it was a great effort for her."

  American History Tops Open Pacers

Improving with time, four-year-old pacer American History established himself as one of harness racing's heavyweights winning the $657,895 Breeders Crown Open Pace on Saturday night at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

The son of American Ideal and Perfect Touch is trained by Tony Alagna and owned by Toronto's Marvin Katz, Kentucky-based breeder Brittany Farms and partner American History Racing.

Driver Joe Bongiorno hustled American History off the gate from post three and was the first to the quarter pole, pocketing outside leaver This Is The Plan (Yannick Gingras) during a sizzling :25.4 opener. Dorsoduro Hanover (Matt Kakaley) settled briefly into the three-hole after leaving from post seven but didn't sit long. He gained a short advantage on the outside as the pacers hit the half in :53.4 before clearing to command.

Meanwhile, Brian Sears made his move with 6-5 favourite McWicked, fresh off back-to-back victories in the Allerage and Dan Rooney, providing cover to a parked out Jimmy Freight (Scott Zeron).

American History continued to track Dorsoduro Hanover past three-quarters in 1:21.3 with McWicked looming on the outside. Powering through as a clear path opened along the pylons, American History prevailed by two lengths in 1:48.3.

He returned $12.10 to win as the 5-1 second wagering choice. Dorsoduro Hanover held off late-closer Always A Prince (David Miller) by a half-length for the runner-up honours while McWicked finished back in fourth.

"There's really no words to explain my excitement and I couldn't do it without Tony and his owners having faith in me," said Bongiorno, celebrating his first Breeders Crown triumph. "This is a fantastic horse and I'm just so grateful."

With major wins against older rivals in the Bobby Quillen Memorial last month capped off by tonight's Breeders Crown, American History is living up to Alagna's early assessment of his talent. Alagna noted his trainee has gained maturity developing into a top pacer throughout his four-year-old campaign.

"Even early in the year, even though he wasn't getting the wins, he was third, fourth to aged horses and he was putting in great miles, pacing huge last halves, had a lot of bad post positions but now he's a mature four-year-old," said Alagna. "He's later in the year and he's going with these guys and he's showed that he's so versatile, he can do it on any size racetrack. He's just a special animal. He's finally showing everybody he's the horse we thought he was all along.

"He just gets better as he matures and Joey's done a great job with him and he's got a lot of confidence in the horse and you can tell that tonight. Not many people would have done what Joey did, but it was a winning move and it worked."

American History has now won five of his 18 starts this year while pushing his seasonal earnings over the $500,000 mark. He now has 16 victories lifetime and more than $1.1 million in the bank.

Matt Kakaley was happy with the effort from runner-up Dorsoduro Hanover, a Breeders Crown winner at three.

"I thought my horse raced giant; big fractions, two moves to the front," he said. "The move down the backside is going to be a little tiring with the wind. It was a pretty good half. He raced great, he did."

Casie Coleman noted that McWicked hit a tendon during that race, which is something he normally doesn't do when competing.

"He had to leave hard out of the outside post, 25 (seconds) and a piece, and ended up first-over again and Brian (Sears) said that headwind is pretty strong out there," said Coleman. "He said he was happy with him, he raced good, that’s just a big mile in a big headwind first-over into it.

"He also hit his tendon tonight, which he’s never done before. I don’t know why, but that’s going to cause him to slow up a little bit too. That’s new for him. He doesn’t wear any boots and he usually doesn’t hit, so I’m not sure why he did that tonight but he did. That’s obviously going to falter him a little bit also. Obviously I’m disappointed he didn’t win but with an outside post and the headwind, the conditions, I thought he raced good enough. Now knowing that he hit that ankle, he’d be affected by that a little bit."

Dancin Lou Collars Bettors Wish At The Wire

In a stretch showdown of the Glamour Boys elimination winners, Dancin Lou got up in time to defeat Bettors Wish at the wire in the $789,474 Breeders Crown Three-Year-Old Colt Pace on Saturday evening at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

"I just won the Breeders Crown!" proclaimed trainer Tahnee Camilleri, who recently gave up practicing law to pursue her passion training horses.

"You always wonder doing a big career change like that if it was the right decision and 12 months ago I think on TVG night I had a horse in one of the undercard races. I was just happy to get a winner on that night," said Camilleri. "Twelve months later to come here on one of the biggest nights of the year and to be a competitor was such an honour, and then to win the race, I'm the luckiest girl in the world."

The Australian native made her Breeders Crown debut a winning one with Andrew McCarthy steering Dancin Lou for owners David Kryway of Amherstburg, Ont., and 1362313 Ontario Ltd.

McCarthy, who previously partnered with Dancin Lou this summer for a Kentucky Sires Stakes victory, picked up the mount -- and ultimately his fourth Breeders Crown victory of the 2019 championships -- with Dexter Dunn opting to drive the Chris Ryder-trained Bettors Wish in the final.

North America Cup champion Captain Crunch (Yannick Gingras) looped longshot leaver Semi Tough (David Miller) after a :26.2 opening quarter before Bettors Wish came calling. He went from third to first before the :55.2 half with Dancin Lou watching from fourth before making his own move past the 1:23 three-quarters mark heading into the final turn. Setting his sights on the 3-5 front-end favourite while 4-1 second choice Captain Crunch tried in vain to gain ground from the pocket, Dancin Lou nailed Bettors Wish at the end of the 1:50.2 mile. Captain Crunch finished 1-3/4 lengths behind the top pair.

"I thought I did, I had the momentum on the outside, I was hoping I did," said McCarthy of the photo finish. "I kind of had a little trouble in the last turn getting his momentum going, but then once I got him rolling there, yeah, what a tough horse, he just digs and digs and digs."

After earning his first and only victory of his 10-race freshman campaign at Mohawk Park last July, Dancin Lou has won 11 of his 18 sophomore starts.

It was his victory in the Tattersalls Pace on Oct. 6 at The Red Mile that put him on target for the Breeders Crown. The Sweet Lou-Dancewiththebest colt has now banked close to $680,000 in purses.

Dancin Lou paid $12.10 to win as the 5-1 third choice.

Tall Dark Stranger.
Tall Dark Stranger Placed First

The Breeders Crown Finals are always highly-electric events, and the 2019 $786,000 ($600,000 USD) Breeders Crown Final for two-year-old colt & gelding pacers was no exception in more ways than one.

Cattlewash (Louis-Philippe Roy) was the first away after the wings of the starting gate folded, eventually yielding to second choice Tall Dark Stranger (Yannick Gingras). That colt hit the opening station in a moderate :27.3 with 6/5 choice Papi Rob Hanover (David Miller) third away. Tall Dark Stranger maintained that lead through a :55.1 half before facing a threat to his outside in elim winner Papi Rob Hanover, flushed out from third by Capt Midnight (Andy McCArthy). The colts kept the tempo honest, flashing by three quarters in 1:23.2 before picking up the intensity turning for home.

Down the Mohawk stretch, Papi Rob Hanover and Tall Dark Stranger were noses apart for the majority of the lane with neither colt giving way. In the final strides, Papi Rob Hanover forged to the front and hit the wire a long nose ahead of Tall Dark Stranger with the mile timed in 1:51. Cattlewash was a few lengths back in third.

Gingras filed an objection against Miller claiming interference in the stretch, and a long judges' inquiry followed. The judges ruled that Papi Rob Hanover did in fact impede the forward progress of Tall Dark Stranger, and was placed to second. Fourth-place finisher Mayhem Hanover was also placed for interfering with Capt Midnight in the stretch, going from fourth to fifth.

A disqualification of a Breeders Crown race winner had only happened twice before (That Fabulous Face in 1998 and Corleone Kosmos in 2007), with both being by trotters that made a break.

"First of all I haven't put an objection in since 2002 probably at Yonkers. It's not something I like to do, I think the judges have a job to do but this is a big moment, the Breeders Crown, and that's why I put the objection up," said Gingras after the decision in the winner's circle. "It's clear in my mind I was coming back to beat David. There was a great battle down the stretch but like I said I had the momentum going forward and David's horse kind of darted in on him a little bit and we hooked forks, and it cost me all my momentum.

"They're two great colts, no doubt about it," continued Gingras, "but like I said my horse showed so much grit tonight and he was passed, he was passed by a good head in the stretch but he showed he's truly a great horse."

Trained by Nancy Johansson, Tall Dark Stranger (Bettors Delight - Precocious Beauty) boasts a summary of 8-1-0 from nine seasonal starts with dazzling earnings of $935,131. Bred by Jim Avritt, the $330,000 yearling is owned by Crawford Farms Racing of Syracuse, N.Y., Marvin Katz of Toronto, Ont., Buck & Judy Chaffee's Caviart Farms of Vienna, Va., and Howard Taylor of Philadelphia, Penn.

"He was definitely much better, I still think he's only at about 95 percent so I think there's more improvement," said Johansson in the winner's circle for her third Breeders Crown win. "Obviously he had a tough week, I wasn't able to train him very much this week. And that was the first time he ever went really fast with the aluminum shoes in front so we were worried about that but it looked like it worked out.

"It means a lot to win a Breeders Crown, as I said earlier in the week it's the best horses, the best trainer and the best drivers so it takes a lot to come together in order to win. My dad has the greatest record ever in the Breeders Crown so it's nice to be able to follow up on that after his retirement."

Katz was extremely complimentary of both colts, calling them "the best in the business" after the race but he wouldn't trade his if given the chance.

"I have to be honest, and actually say that I think the best horse became the winner. Mr. McDuffee is a friend of mine and I like him a great deal, and Brett Pelling -- who I have a great deal of respect for -- I'm sure this is hard for them but the truth is Tall Dark Stranger deserved to win."

Reflect With Me.
Reflect With Me Upsets The Apple Cart

There were three fillies getting a lot of attention heading into the 2019 $786,000 ($600,000 USD) Breeders Crown Final for two-year-old pacing fillies, but Reflect With Me was not one of them. She has placed herself back into the conversation of the division's best with a come-from-behind Breeders Crown victory.

Leaving from post position eight, Andrew McCarthy settled Reflect With Me near the back of the field as elimination winner Priceless (Brandon Bates) sprinted out for command. The field settled into the first turn as Priceless hit the first quarter in :26.4.

Passing that point, Tim Tetrick angled favoured Lyons Sentinel out from third and the fellow elim winners paced as a tandem toward the half before Bates yielded and allowed Lyons Sentinel to pace through the midway mark in a sharp :53.3. The third elimination winner, New Year (Corey Callahan) made her presence felt with a first-over attack, giving cover to Ontario starlet Alicorn (Louis-Philippe Roy) as the outer flow started to develop. As the third station was reached in 1:22.1, Lyons Sentinel maintained command and fronted the field turning for home.

When the head of the lane was reached, fillies fanned out five-wide from the backfield and widest of all was Reflect With Me. McCarthy gave her the cue in the stretch and she responded with a wicked front-side brush to nail Lyons Sentinel in the final strides for the 27-1 upset. Marloe Hanover (Dexter Dunn) rallied to complete the top three, with the mile timed in a lifetime-best matching 1:50.3.

"This filly raced so good tonight," said a jubilant McCarthy after his second career Breeders Crown win. "She raced really good last week too in the elimination. I was just a little too far back off slow fractions.

"When I saw :53 pop up I was still a little worried being fourth over but I knew she'd have a good enough kick in the stretch to at least run into some money...but she dug and dug and dug. She was a little tired at the wire but she just kept on pacing."

Reflect With Me (Captaintreacherous - Remember When) nwo boasts a 5-3-2 summary and $621,641 in earnings from 11 rookie starts for trainer Tony Alagna -- winning his second Breeders Crown of the night. Brad Grant of Milton, Ont. co-owns Reflect With Me along with breeder Brittany Farms of Versailles, Ky.

"When Ramona [Hill] won I had to warm up Capt Midnight. Andy was nice enough to win another one so I could get my picture taken," said Alagna with a smile in the winner's circle. "Andy and I talked about it beforehand, we actually talked about it when the draw came out. I said the beauty of it is there's a lot of speed inside of us...she had a pace to close into and that made the difference."

Owner Brad Grant relished the opportunity to win two such prestigious races in his backyard.

"This is great, I don't have to carry those trophies too far to get them home," said an elated Grant. "Andrew had all the faith in her and she kept coming and coming. I didn't know whether she got there but the consensus in the dining room was that she did so I listened to them."

Grant also complimented the team at Woodbine Mohawk Park for the sensational job in hosting this prestigious harness racing event.

"It shows what Woodbine Mohawk Park has done and what they're trying to do here. And I think we're showing the Standardbred world that we are a #1 facility."
