Bee Line turns in a honey in Elegantimage

TORONTO, June 17Bee Line, with Luc Ouellette in the bike, outlasted a group of longshots to win the $559,200 Elegantimage Stakes for three-year-old trotting fillies, Saturday at Woodbine, on Pepsi North America Cup night.

After Buck I St Pat, the overwhelming 3-5 post-time favourite, made a break at the start, the race became a wide-open affair, as Oaklea Odessa and Paul MacDonell seized the front and took the field through a half in 55.4 and three-quarters in 1:25.1.

But the pack was closing in, as first Oaklea Omega briefly got in front in mid-stretch, before Bee Line buzzed up on the outside to wrest command. At the wire, 10-1 Bee Line was one and one-half lengths in front of 34-1 Armbro Domino, while 59-1 KD Girl wound up third, in 1:54.4. Oaklea Omega, an 11-1 outsider, finished fourth.

My tactics were to follow (the favourite) but when she broke, obviously that went out the window, said Ouellette. But I thought it made the race more even. Shes very versatile. I just thought going those type of fractions, we were going to better off coming from behind.

I was very confident (turning for home). I moved early on the turn. She was well within herself. This filly is only going to get better, I believe.

Last week, the daughter of Self Possessed had won her Elegantimage elimination on the front end, scoring in 1:57, but tonights mark was a career best, equalling the seasons fastest mark thus far for her age, sex and gait in North America.

Owned by Johanna Beaver of Delaware, Ohio and trained by Chris Beaver, Bee Line earned $279,600 for the win, her third in five starts this year, after taking three of six outings in 2005.

Bee Line paid $22.50, $12.40 and $9.30, combining with Armbro Domino ($24.30, $10.80) for a $681.20 (4-7) exactor. A 4-7-1 (KD Girl, $19.50 to show) triactor was worth $5,291.20.

Meanwhile, one 20-cent Superfecta ticket (4-7-1-2) was sold and was worth $27,370.05

Dominant winners in Elegantimage elims

TORONTO, June 9 The winners were good in all three $35,000 eliminations of the Elegantimage Stakes at Woodbine on Friday night.

Actually, Buck I St Pat, Oaklea Omega and Bee Line were not just good, they were never-in-doubt dominant in preparation for the lucrative final, set for the undercard on North America Cup night, next Saturday at the Toronto oval.

A top three finish was required to qualify for the $559,200 event. A tenth horse, drawn by lot from the fourth-place finishers, also gained entry to the final.

In first elimination, Buck I St Pat sat mid-pack early (:57.3 at the half), seized the lead in the mid-stretch and never looked back, trotting to a 3 -length victory over Oaklea Odessa in 1:55.4. Merles Pearl was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Buck I St Pat stayed in current good form, notching her second straight win and third of the 2006 campaign for Dave Palone, trainer Michael Burke and the ownership group of Howard Taylor and Edwin Gold of Pennsylvania, Abraham Basen of Nevada and her breeder Ron Fuller of Ohio.

The Jailhouse Jesse filly, who won the Casual Breeze Stakes last time out, paid $4.10 to win.

The top local hope for the final rests with Oaklea Omega as the Balanced Image bay pounded her rivals in the evenings second stanza.

Paul MacDonell drove the John Bax pupil to a 6 -length win over Armbro Domino. Drugeda was beaten 8 lengths, but qualified for the final by finishing third.

Oaklea Omega, like Buck I St Pat, stalked an early pace (:58 to the half) in mid-pack, but no one was better from mid-turn to the wire, as she went a final quarter in :29.3 and getting the mile in 1:57.

The now four-time winner, owned by a local consortium (Parkhill Stud Farm, Brilo Farms, Glenn Van Camp and Venture K Stable), also captured a division of the Casual Breeze last week.

Oaklea Omega, who paid $5 to win, was bred in Ontario by Dr. David Grant of Simcoe and Kenneth Grant of Waterford.

Bee Line did all the work early (:57.2 at the half) and had plenty left late, rolling to a six-length win in 1:57 in the third elim.

Luc Ouellette drove the Self Possessed filly to her second win of the season for trainer Chris Beaver and owner Johanna Beaver of Ohio.

Meadowview Tiffy, the under 2-1 post-time choice, finished second, while Winning Sister trotted home third, beaten 12 lengths.

Bee Line, a Kentucky-bred who made a break in the Casual Breeze division won by Oaklea Odessa last week, paid $8.30 to win.

The post-positions for the final were also drawn this evening. The elimination winners were granted a choice of posts.

KD Girl rounds out the 10-horse field after finishing fourth in the second division. The other two also-rans, Mai Tai and Porsche Hall are on the Also Eligible list.
