Bee A Magician remains perfect in 2013; romps to 1:52.4 Crown score
“Bee A Magician just coasts away,” is how track announcer Jim Beviglia saw the finish of the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, as Bee A Magician, driven by Brian Sears, made her season a perfect 15 for 15.

Bee A Magician took the lead from Frau Blucher (Ron Pierce), who held it momentarily after a bold move to the front off the gate, and was never headed through fractions of :27 to the quarter, :55.2 to the half, 1:24 at the three-quarters and 1:52.4 for the win by 4-1/2 lengths on the sloppy track.

Frau Blucher was second and Southwind Cocoa (Tim Tetrick) was third, Thistle Du (Brett Miller) was fourth.

Bee A Magician is trained by Richard "Nifty" Norman for owners David McDuffee, Mel Hartman and Herb Liverman.

“That’s amazing, you couldn’t expect that,” said Norman of the filly’s perfect record this year. “It’s her attitude; she just wants it more than anything else.”

Asked if she might race against male horses in an expected return to the races in 2014, Norman said, “I might have to. There are not too many races for 4-year old mares. She’s unbelievable. It was a pretty big half and a sticky track, and you’re always a little bit concerned, but she’s just amazing. She makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up just when you’re warming her up. She’s special for sure.”

“It’s an honor to get the chance to drive a filly like that,” said driver Brian Sears. “Whenever you go behind the gate, you’ve got an awful lot of confidence. She’s awesome. She’s really good.

“There are trouble spots I don’t want to be in when I’ve got a horse like that and I try to avoid those situations and let the horse do the rest. There’s always pressure (with an undefeated horse). If you win, you’re supposed to. If you don’t, it’s a big disappointment. You have to get it done.”

Bee A Magician has now earned $1,359,184 this year and $2,125,836 lifetime. She has 25 victories in 28 career starts.
