Wolfgang brushed to the lead before the half and maintained control to win the $266,000 Goodtimes Trot by open lengths over Stormont Ventnor in 1:52.1 on Saturday, June 16 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The Hambletonian-hopeful son of My Mvp inherited the pocket to Lawmaker past the quarter in :27.3 after Hat Trick Habit made a break around the first turn. Driver Yannick Gingras circled Wolfgang to the top heading to the half while Alarm Detector moved first over from fourth through a :56.2 clocking.
Alarm Detector marched closer towards Wolfgang around the final turn. Hat Trick Habit lost stride again, leaving an opening for Stormont Ventnor to catch cover second over. Reaching three-quarters in 1:24.3, Wolfgang quickly opened two lengths on Stormont Ventnor rallying wide of Alarm Detector into second, and expanded that margin heading to the wire while Alarm Detector, the 7/5 second choice, chased in third.
Trained by Jimmy Takter, Wolfgang is undefeated from two starts this season and won his fifth race in 12 starts overall, earning $464,275 for owners Brixton Medical Inc., Goran Falk and Fair Island Farm Inc. The colt out of the Mr Vic mare Summer Savory returned $4.30 to win.
“[Wolfgang] is a very good horse and you can do anything you want with this horse,” Jimmy Takter said. “He was a really big horse and a little bit immature [last year]. I drove most of his early races in Kentucky and he got better and better as the year went. He’s a very different horse—I don’t think we’ve seen a limit in him yet.”
