Freshman trotters lightning fast in Ohio Sires Stakes
Nine $40,000 divisions of 2-year-old trotting
colts and fillies provided plenty of thrills to Scioto Downs fans on Friday night (July 20), despite hissing rains and ever-threatening
thunderstorms.
Trainer Chris Beaver had three OSS winners while Kimberly Dailey
harnessed two winners in the second round action of OSS competition for
state-bred diagonally-gaited youngsters.
Aunt Rose, a 9-5 shot with Ronnie Wrenn Jr. aboard, gave Beaver his
first training victory of the night in OSS competition. The Uncle Peter
lass had won OSS leg one on July 3 at Northfield in 1:59.1 with a
wire-to-wire effort, and this time used come-from-behind tactics to draw
away by 4-1/4 lengths for owners Beaver, Michael Carter, Joe Sbrocco and
Steven Zeehandelar in 1:59. One Last Howl was second with Mike Wilder
driving at 5-1, with 14-1 longshot Well I’m Fancy (Chris Page) garnering
third-place honors.
Aunt Rose now has $40,000 in career earnings from her two OSS triumphs.
Bred by Spring Haven Farm and Doug Millard, Aunt Rose is out of the
Yankee Glide mare Lightning Flower, making her a half-sister to
Lightning Storm (by Donato Hanover) 4,1:53.2f ($341,917); Wildflower (by
Muscle Hill) 3,1:55 ($267,487); and Lightning Force (by Muscle Hill)
3,1:53 ($169,906).
Beaver then stepped up to capture the fourth OSS division for colts with
4-1 Never Say Uncle (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) in 1:58.4. This Uncle Peter
gelding sat second behind the 4-5 leader Oh So Pine (Anthony MacDonald),
an OSS leg one winner, before unleashing a :29.4 final panel to brush by
the leader and take the victory by a half-length. Bosley, also an OSS
leg one winner, was third at 6-1 for Ryan Stahl.
Owned in partnership by his trainer, along with breeders Johanna Beaver,
Michael Carter and Mary McLoughlin, Never Say Uncle has $22,000 in
earnings. He is the first foal out of the Glidemaster mare Travelin
Dream 3,1:55.3f ($40,745).
Stablemate Pure Chance captured a OSS filly division for driver Aaron
Merriman in 1:59.2 as the 2-1 choice. Owned by Beaver along with Steven
Zeehandelar, the brown daughter of Triumphant Caviar was third in leg
one of this series and got the perfect two-hole steer by Merriman in leg
two to up her career earnings to $24,800 in just her second lifetime
start. She held off leg one winner, the 3-2 favorite Stone In Love
(Chris Page), by a scant neck. Fingerinthefrostin was third, a
half-length back, for Danny Noble at 9-1.
Pure Chance was bred by Jonas Schlabach, and is the sixth foal out of
the Credit Winner mare Jewell Creek 3,Q2:01s ($6,036). She is a full
sister to Ohio Sires Stake winner Sesame 3,1:57.4f ($121,677).
Kimberly Dailey harnessed Ilooklikeanallstar to victory in the first OSS
division for colts. The freshman gelded son of Ilooklikemymom grabbed
the lead away from 10-1 He’s Star Struck (Tyler Rush) at the :28.1 first
quarter and never looked back, trotting to victory in 1:58.1, officially
breaking his maiden in his second pari-mutuel start for driver Danny
Noble. Ilooklikeanallstar, a mild 13-1 longshot, finished two lengths
ahead of 10-1 Cumberland Gap (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.), with 5-2 Homer Hall
(Ryan Stahl) 2-1/4 lengths back in third.
Bred by Andrew Kauffman and owned by Virginia Powell, Ilooklikeanallstar
is the second foal out of the Tagliabue mare Chanteuse 3,1:59.2h
($32,332).
Dailey and Noble teamed up again for another trip to the winner’s circle,
this time with the Winbak Yankee colt Yankees Image, who trotted to a
1:57.4 triumph as the 8-5 choice in the third OSS contest for colts.
Owned and bred by Benlee W. Troyer, Yankees Image used nearly the same
tactics as stablemate Ilooklikeanallstar to complete his mission for
these connections, also making just his second pari-mutuel outing.
Yankees Image, who bested 5-1 rival Westfiftysecond (Anthony MacDonald)
by a half-length and 10-1 third-place finisher Wittyville (Mike Wilder),
is the second and most prolific foal out of the Muscles Yankee mare
Livias Secret 4,1:59.2f ($29,577).
Only Take Cash -- who finished second by a neck in the OSS leg one at
Northfield Park on July 3 -- redeemed herself in leg two, scoring a
1:57.1 triumph for trainer Bob McIntosh and driver Aaron Merriman. The
bay daughter of Cash Hall, who left the gate as the 5-1 choice, made a
three-wide move around the final turn to overtake OSS leg one winner 6-1
Vivi D (Trace Tetrick) and prevail by a length with a :28.2 final brush.
Mike Wilder steered 55-1 longshot Meadowbranch Vicki to a third-place
finish.
Only Take Cash, bred and owned in partnership by Robert McIntosh Stables
along with Dave Boyle and Mardon Stables, now has $35,320 in career
earnings. She is the fifth foal out of the Garland Lobell mare Armbro
Affair 4,1:53.4s ($430,997).
A second pair of Canadians prevailed in an OSS colt division, with the
team of trainer Jason McGinnis and driver Anthony MacDonald scoring with
14-1 shot Yes in 1:59.2. The Manofmanymissions gelding overcame 13-1
Just A Passenger (Jeremy Indof) in mid-stretch to win by two lengths,
with 9-2 Otsego (Aaron Merriman) moved up from fourth to third after
50-1 Creekside Pete (Sandy Beatty) was set back to fourth after
finishing third. Yes now has $24,800 in career earnings.
Bred by New Jersey-based trainer Eddie Lohmeyer, Yes is out of the
Muscles Yankee mare Fantasy Yankee 3,1:56.3 ($63,805).
Trainer Mark Winters Sr. harnessed leg one winner Lane Of Stone to an
impressive, nine length victory in the final OSS colt division. Jeff
Nisonger drove the 3-1 son of Wishing Stone to a 1:58.2 clocking for
breeders-owners Harry and Iris Horowitz. Shake N Bake (Greg Grismore)
was second at 9-1 odds, with 7-1 ELO Hanover (Danny Noble) third.
Lane Of Stone, whose career earnings now stand at $43,424, is the fourth
foal out of the Lindy Lane mare Wisteria Lane 4,1:57.3 ($18,559).
In the final OSS division for fillies, it was 6-5 Feel Invincible As
finishing as the public dictated, clocked in 1:58.1 for driver Elliott
Deaton. This Broadway hall lass, who is trained by Anette Lorentzon for
breeders-owners ACL Stuteri AB and Kjell Johansson, was all alone at the
wire, besting 48-1 rival Bella’s Rose Power (Chris Beaver) by 6-1/4
lengths with 8-5 shot and OSS leg one winner Spirit Bell (Ryan Stahl)
getting up for third.
This second lifetime triumph upped Feel Invincible As’ career earnings
to $27,500. She is the sixth foal out of the Credit Winner mare There’s
A Way 3,1:56.3 ($150,591), making her a half-sister to Touchdown As (by
Deweycheatumnhowe) 1:53s ($182,403).
