Program Australien 2012  I Can Doosit unique in harness racing history

Star Kiwi gelding I Can Doosit assumed what will forever remain a unique place in harness racing history with his sprint-lane win in tonight's Inter Dominion Trotting Championship finale at Melton's Tabcorp Park. Mark Purdon's brilliant six-year-old already adorned Australasian trotting's most revered honour roll, but he ensured he would remain its final winner when he proved too strong for compatriots Vulcan and Sovereignty in the $250,000 Group 1.

The son of Muscles Yankee joined Scotch Notch, Pride Of Petite, Take A Moment and Sundons Gift as dual winners of the series that was first run in 1948 and while its discontinuation denies him a shot at becoming the first ever three-time winner, Purdon was just happy to win the final renewal.

It certainly does feel very special, its a pretty emotional moment, he said.

There is a tinge of sadness, but I suppose you have to move on. Its always been a great carnival and Ive been happy to be a part of it, but there will be other races take its place and well move on and try and win those other good races.

I Can Doosit gave Purdon a fifth training win in the Inter Dominion trot having won three-straight titles courtesy of champion mare Pride Of Petite (1996/97) and Buster Hanover (1998).

It also completed a memorable Sky Racing Nights Of Glory for the Kiwi legend, who prepared Highview Tommy to a boilover win over Sushi Sushi in last weeks Ballarat Cup.

While that win came as a shock, with Highview Tommy starting at $102, there was no surprise about I Can Doosits performance.

He scored up for the 2760-metre event the raging $1.50 favourite and his grip on the event became even stronger when his biggest danger, I Didnt Do It ($9), galloped after finding an easy lead, enabling I Can Doosit to assume the spot behind Kiwi front-runner The Fiery Ginga.

After a 1:22.4 lead time, The Fiery Ginga got away with a 62.3-second first half of the last mile, which played into the hands of the favourite.

The race hotted up with a 29secs third split and while favourite backers were sweating when Vulcan charged around to challenge for the lead round the home turn, I Can Doosit sprinted sharply when the sprint lane appeared.

He powered home in a 28.8secs final quarter to score by 5.3m from Vulcan ($14) with Sovereignty ($23) making good ground from the rear to claim third. The Fiery Ginga ($27) completed a Kiwi first four, with Im Dejazzman ($51) the first Aussie home in fifth spot.

The mile rate was 2:00.8, which was just 0.1secs outside Let Me Thrus track record.

The win completed an undefeated Inter Dominion series for I Can Doosit, who was a dominant winner of his opening round heat at Shepparton before dead-heating with I Didnt Do It in his second qualifier on Ballarat Cup night.

I was a bit lucky when I Didnt Do It made a break and there was an opportunity to get on Fiery Gingas back, Purdon said. I didnt think hed hand up at any stage, so I was happy to be there.

You do sweat on that passing lane, but it all worked out good tonight.

The disappointment of the race was 2009/10 Inter Dominion champion, Sundons Gift, who had to work to spot outside the leader at the 1700m, but the only Australian millionaire trotter was gone at the 700m and failed to beat a runner home.

If I felt he was going to go like he did, I wouldnt have brought him here, trainer/driver Chris Lang said. Nothing seems wrong with him and were assessing his future as I speak.

It was disappointing, hes been a great horse, but Ill go home and put on DVDs of the ones he did win.

While tonights race was the end of trotting era, the squaregaiters will continue to be well catered for in Victoria with Harness Racing Victoria to introduce a new race worth $350,000 from next season.
