Royalty For Life Wins The Hambletonian
Royalty For Life was crowned the champion of the $1 million Hambletonian, which returned to its historic heat format this year, on Saturday afternoon at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

After overcoming an outside post position to win the fastest of three elimination heats earlier in the day in 1:52 flat, Royalty For Life returned to take the final of the 88th edition of the trotting classic in 1:52.1 for driver Brian Sears and trainer George Ducharme.

The Hambletonian returned to a heat format for the first time since 1996 with the top three finishers from each of the eliminations advancing to the final along with the highest money-winning fourth-place finisher.

With the inside post advantage for the final, Royalty For Life established the lead and forced post nine leaver Smilin Eli (Tim Tetrick) to settle for a two-hole trip through a :26.2 opening panel. The 4-5 favourite proceeded to lead the field of 10 to the half in :55 and three-quarters in 1:23.3 with the other elimination winners, Spider Blue Chip (Ron Pierce) and Creatine (Mike Lachance), advancing first and second over. But once Royalty For Life hit the top of the stretch, he drew away from his rivals to secure the victory. Smilin Eli edged out Corky (David Miller) in a photo for second.

Royalty For Life paid $3.60 to win.

The Royalty RC-Bourbon N Grits colt was bred by Alfred Ross of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts and is shared in ownership with Raymond Campbell of Belchertown, Massachusetts and Paul Fontaine of Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

He earned millionaire status while notching his 11th career win in 21 starts.

Sears became the first driver to win both the Hambletonian and the companion filly event, the $500,000 Hambletonian Oaks, in the same day. He won the Oaks one race prior aboard Bee A Magician.

Royalty For Life
Royalty For Life wins the first Hambletonian elim
Royalty For Life put room between himself and the field to win the first $70,000 elimination race in 1:52.

Driver Brian Sears wasted no time in getting Royalty For Life off the starting gate from post eight and into the lead by the :26.4 first quarter, with High Bridge (Yannick Gingras) on his back. Those two led the field to the :54.3 half.

Royalty For Life was still on the lead at the 1:23.1 three-quarters with Smilin Eli off the rail and trying to advance on the leaders. As the field straightened for home, though, there was no one close enough to catch Brian Sears, who had the lines in his lap as he guided Royalty For Life to the win by 1-3/4 lengths.

Royalty For Life (RC Royalty-Bourbon 'n Grits) is trained by George Ducharme for owners Chip Campbell, Al Ross and Paul Fontaine.

“He was a little aggressive but not terrible,” said winning driver Brian Sears. “I've seen him a lot worse. Getting some more starts in him, he has more confidence and he’s getting to know what we want him to do out there. He’s a little more comfortable I think. He was two fingers calm. He was a little more excitable in the Dancer but the more races he gets under his belt, the more confident he’s going to be and I look for him to be even better in the second heat. (In the last eighth) I was just getting the bit in his mouth and letting him roll along. I think he had a little more in the tank.”

Trainer George Ducharme does not anticipate any changes in the final.

“I don’t think we will do anything, the way he was that trip. I think I will leave everything about the same. I don’t know if it's safe to say, I’m always going to be apprehensive (about him making a break) but now that he’s got in a regular schedule racing every week, we’re ahead of the curve. The way he’s trained, he’s been behind horses. He’s not just a dead front runner.”

Creatine
Creatine wins second Hambletonian elims
Creatine went to the front and never looked back to win the second of three Hambletonian eliminations. Driven by four-time Hambo winner Mike Lachance for trainer Bob Stewart, Creatine won by two lengths over Wheeling N Dealin in 1:52.4.

Aperfectyankee finished third to join Creatine and Wheeling N Dealin in the Hambo final. Dontyouforgetit was fourth and with more than $569,000 in lifetime earnings was in a good spot to get the fourth-place finisher spot in the final. Only stablemate Corky in the third elim has greater earnings.

Sent off at odds of 5-1, Creatine has won three of seven races this year and six of 14 lifetime starts. He set fractions of :27, :55 and 1:23.4 on his way to the victory.

“My horse can leave good and what am I going to do there, take back? You almost have no chance to come back in the first three,” Lachance said. “He’s a very talented horse. It didn’t bother him one bit to go to the half in :55. It might bother some of the others that were following me.”

Stewart said he planned on no changes heading to the Hambletonian final.

“I don’t think so; I think we’ll stick with Mike,” he said with a laugh.

Spider Blue Chip
Spider Blue Chip - third Hambletonian division
Three $70,000 Hambletonian elimination heats and three winners that led from start to finish as Spider Blue Chip and driver Ron Pierce led from the start and won by a half of a length off of the pocket-sitting Corky in 1:53.4.

Flying out of the starting gate, Spider Blue Chip cut easy fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:25.2 before starting down the stretch. Corky could not find clearance until mid stretch but it was too late. Lauderdale (Corey Callahan) was third with Possessed Fashion (John Campbell) fourth.

Dontyouforgetit, with $575,000 in career earning, will also race in the finish as the fastest money earner of the three fourth place finishers.

It was the fourth win in the last five starts for Spider Blue Chip, who has five wins this year for trainer Chuck Sylvester and owner Melvin Hartman of Ottawa, Ontario. He paid $3.80 to win.

“I just put him on the lead and he did the work,” Pierce said. “Once we got to the half mile he relaxed and I just let him do it.”

“I asked Ronnie to just bring me back a horse with something left,” Sylvester said. “And he did for sure. Now we will work on him (Spider Blue Chip), make some changes and have him ready for the final heat.”
