D'One captures North Ameican debut in Fresh Yankee
D’One was the one in the $181,450 Fresh Yankee for trotting mares on Saturday (Aug. 8) at The Meadowlands, charging down the center of the track to overtake Bee A Magician in the final strides to win the 1-1/8 mile contest by a length.
A Swedish champion, D’One is American-bred, a daughter of a pair of world champions, Donato Hanover and Giant Diablo. It was her first race, except for one qualifier on July 25, in ten weeks. D’One was driven by Orjan Kihlstrom for trainer Roger Walmann and owners Stall Kenny 23.
The field left the starting gate in mid-stretch and White Becomes Her (David Miller) and Bee A Magician (Brian Sears) flirted with the lead before Classic Martine (Tim Tetrick) got to the first quarter in :25.2.
She was quickly overtaken by first Handover Belle (Yannick Gingras) and then Bee A Magician, who led the field to the :54.3 half and on to the 1:23.3 three-quarters.
Bee A Magician was still on the lead when the field hit the 1:51.4 mile, but Shake It Cerry (Johnny Takter) was fanned out third across the track, ready to pounce and moving. D’One was outside of her and moving faster, though, and she got past them all for the win in 2:05. Bee A Magician was second and Shake It Cerry was third.
“She’s a horse that can trot pretty good,” said Walmann. “I’ve said for two years that I wanted to go over and beat the time of her mother (1:50.1) with D’One, so I have to try.”
