Shake It Cerry strolls in $140,100 Matron Stake
Shake It Cerry shook it with ease at Dover Downs Sunday as the two-year-old trotting filly strolled to an easy two and one-half length triumph in winning
the $140,100 Matron Stake in 1:55.2.
Noon Tea Party (Andy Miller) took the early lead with Fashion Huntress (John Campbell) grabbing the two-hole spot to the opening quarter mile in :27. But Ron Pierce already had the 1/9 favorite, Shake It Cerry, on the move and they trotted right to the lead.
Shake It Cerry then led the field to the half mile in :56.3 and the three-quarters in 1:26.1 as Ruby (Yannick Gingras), a 52-1 long shot, came first-over and tried to mount a challenge. But in the stretch Ron Pierce had Shake It Cerry holding the field at bay for the victory. Ruby was second with Scream And Shout (Tim Tetrick) a late closer for third place.
�She is by far the best two-year-old filly I have ever driven,� Said Ron Pierce. �I don�t think I have ever driven a two-year-old colt as good as this filly. Tonight was like a training mile for her. I didn�t pull the ear plugs. I only tapped her once with the whip just to make sure she trotted to the wire.�
It was the fourth straight win for Shake It Cerry and her seventh victory of the season. The daughter of Donate Hanover was bred and is owned by the Solveig�s Racing Partners of East Windsor, NJ. That group is comprised of trainer Jimmy Takter, his wife Christina and the Takter Family. Shake It Cerry went off as the 1/9 favorite and paid $2.10 to win.
�Solveig is the mother of Shake It Cerry and she was named after my mother,� Takter explained. �And Shake It Cerry is named after my sister. We try and keep the names in the family. This filly (Shake It Cerry) is just a fantastic horse. I am just so happy to be involved with her. She just keeps getting stronger and stronger.�
